Master and Student Chronicles | Conversation 3 | The Hypocrite

Every man alone is sincere. At the entrance of a second person, hypocrisy begins. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Vedant: Can one know if he is being a hypocrite?
Mr. Swamy: What makes you ask this?
Vedant: Many actions and emotions of mine make me feel I am one!
Mr. Swamy: Well, everybody is a hypocrite. As they say – Nobody lives a black or white life. Everybody lives a shade of gray. The whitish the shade, the lesser of a hypocrite you are. Nevertheless, what makes you feel like one ?
Vedant: Someone made me a promise and broke it. It hurt me badly and made me develop a sense of hatred towards that person. But then I realize, there have been many promises I made to myself and I’ve broken most of them. Yet, I don’t feel the same hatred towards myself. I forgive myself but it is difficult for me to forgive others. This makes me feel I’m a hypocrite.
Mr. Swamy: Do you really think knowing the answer to this question will make any difference to your life?
Vedant: May be not. But I must know.
Mr. Swamy: There are two types of people in the world. One who never care to know the answer to this question. The other who care to know the answer but will never know !
